However, my sister was pregnant. She had been staying with me, since her husband and my mother are away on business this week. I had planned to release this edition on Sunday. She went into labor last Sunday and had her baby yesterday. MY FAMILY COMES FIRST. I was not going to let her go through the labor no matter how many times I wanted to throw up in the delivery room. All the while my girlfriend, Jessica babysat my niece in the hospital waiting room trying to get a hold my mom or my sister's husband whom I've nicknamed "Scum" for missing his daughter's birth and putting me through 24 hours of hell. I arrived home too late to put out the edition. I had planned to have my girlfriend release it for me. Instead, she printed some e-mail correspondence for me which I dicated responses to. This is not excuse, but rather an explanation. The next edition will be release on Sunday or may be skipped entirely in order for me to build up news for an new edition. I've spent the last half hour adding 49 new members to Warp 10. I'm sorry couldn't respond to you all sooner. By the way, for all you curious folk out there. She had a 9 lb. 8 ounce girl at 20 inches. No name yet. Mother and daughter doing fine. I commend you ladies who have gone through labor. I wouldn't wait to go through it. Thank you all for understanding. Few, if any, distinguish a person in history, however. Having one's likeness portrayed on a postage stamp is another honorarium of sorts. Specifically, an individual who's likeness graces a U.S. postage stamp must have left a lasting contribution to the United States and its citizens' way of life. Whereas deceased presidents are honored immediately after death with a commemorative issue postage stamp, all others must be deceased a minimum of ten years before a commemorative would be considered. Those who have the honor and responsibility of choosing what and who goes on a postage stamp lies with the United States Stamp Advisory Committee. This committee is made up of business people, educators, celebraties, etc., whose sole purpose is to weed through the thousands of suggestions received from the public each year, choosing those few which meet the criteria, and presenting their recommendations to the United States Postal Service and the Postmaster General. Normally, this process takes two to three years before a stamp is issued. Now, we have before us an opportunity to express ourselves to honor a man who has made a "mark" on not only the United States, but on the world, too. His legacy, his dream has inspired writers, doctors, engineers, astronauts, scientists, inventors, and millions of others who foster a hope of a better tomorrow. This man is Gene Roddenberry. Gene Roddenberry died in 1991. Following the time restraints imposed, he would be elligible to be honored on a postage stamp in the year 2001, the first year of the Twenty-First Century. That year is also Star Trek's 35th anniversary. Personally, this writer would not desire to wait until the 25th anniversary of Gene's death and the 50th anniversary of Star Trek before a commemorative stamp is issued to honor the creator of an "American icon." Because even today, as we look around us, we see bits and pieces of Gene's idea and his hope taking shape around us. Star Trek is based on the principles of IDIC (Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combinations), a Vulcan belief that everyone can achieve their best through and with everyone else. We are slowly seeing how the people of this planet are becoming one with each other. This small, insignificant world we live on is home to us all. The fall of Communism in the former Soviet Union and the open dialogue and new understandings between former foes; reuniting of West and East Germany; peace accords between Israel and Egypt, the PLO, and Jordan; non-agression pact between Russia and the People's Republic of China (the last stronghold of Communism where it too, is facing extinction); and the cooperative space station endeavor which takes shape as this is being written; all these and more are just the starting line where we can live in a united planet. Freedom has seen a startling revival and the people who have missed its pleasures bask in its physical and mental delights. Though the road isn't completely free of potholes, the journey has begun and there's little to turn us back. All these events, Gene foresaw--not particularly with these specifics--but, nonetheless, in the grand scheme of Star Trek and Earth. If you've had the occasion to visit a friend or relative in the hospital, specifically in intensive care, you would feel as though you just walked into the Sickbay of the Starship Enterprise. If you use a cellular phone or Skypager, if you use a personal computer, drive a car, or even watch television, the technology has a base within the space program and a link to Star Trek. Gene had one eye on the science community when he began Star Trek to make it more believable. Yet, Star Trek has inspired the technological community to advance further. Talking computers? They're here albeit still very expensive and rudimentary. By 2001, Jimmy Doohan's line as Scotty in Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, won't seem as funny as we'll be able to walk into our homes and say, "Hello, Computer," and it will answer us back. Fancy ideas brought to life by people who, in a vast majority of cases, saw Star Trek and thought, "this can be done. Now, let's figure out how to do it." So as an inspiration to the citizenry of the United States, Gene had profound impact. If you feel as I do, now is the time to start the process of convincing the Stamp Advisory Committee to make it's decision for a "Gene Roddenberry Commemorative Stamp" to be issued the latter part of 2001. We brought Star Trek back from cancellation by NBC. We convinced NASA to name the first space shuttle "Enterprise." Now we can honor the man who started it all by pushing, and I mean pushing hard and frequently, the Stamp Advisory Committee to strongly recommend Gene be so honored. The committee receives thousands of requests each year. We collectively could make that a million for our cause. Let's begin to write those letters, stating in your own words, why you feel Gene Roddenberry should be honored with a commemorative stamp. The lead time we need is NOW. And we, the citizenry of the United States, the citizenry of the Planet Earth, have the means before us to make this happen. In other words, let's make pests of ourselves so the Stamp Advisory Committee has little choice but to do what is right and just. It's the least we can do to honor the man who inspired and inspires us all. Kimmel "My principle reason for being here to tonight is simply to have a good time," said Patrick Stewart -- known to millions as Captain Jean-Luc Picard of "Star Trek: The Next Generation," seen in reruns nightly at 7 p.m. on channel 56. He was the celebrity host of a benefit dinner in Boston last Friday for the Whale Conservation Institute, but took some time to talk about his career, and why he chose to lend his support to the group. Asked how he chooses which causes to support and which invitations to decline, Stewart turned thoughtful. "I find myself having to think about that a great deal. In the same way that celebrity came up with me late in my career, the power that came with it did, too," he explained, "What brings me here tonight and what first got me involved in this project is friendship.... It's not something I had to think of, because on friendship you simply act." Stewart is a long time friend and colleague of actress Lisa Harrow, who is married to Dr. Roger S. Payne, founder of the Institute. Payne arranged for Stewart to go out on the Institute's ship, the Odyssey, where he got to see whales and had a close encounter with a friendly sea lion. "The whole idea of respect for one's fellow creatures is also part of `Star Trek', so this is not in any way a stretch for me," he said. Currently Stewart's career is on two tracks, one "Trek" and one not. He attended a meeting just last Thursday on the next "Star Trek: The Next Generation" movie, although they don't know if it will be called "Star Trek VIII" or "Star Trek: Generations II." He did say that the discussion kept returning to the episode "Yesterday's Enterprise" -- where Picard and company end up in an alternate universe. Filming is expect to begin in early 1996. He also has what he called a "standing invitation" to direct an episode of one of the ongoing "Trek" shows, "Deep Space Nine" and "Voyager." Said Stewart, "I've actually been penciled in to direct a couple of episodes but had to drop out because of other commitments." He recently met the newest captain, Kate Mulgrew of "Voyager," and thinks she's great in the role. As for his non-"Trek" acting, he hopes to film his one man version of "A Christmas Carol," but "sadly, that's not progressing." Although he said in New York last year that he would not do it on stage again, he said he's had second thoughts and is toying with the idea of a national tour, which would include a Boston stop. He also has two movies coming out this year, "Jeffrey," where he plays a gay man whose lover has AIDS, and "Let It Be Me," where he is a sleazy dance instructor. He will also play Prospero in a Central Park production of "The Tempest" this summer. "It's been a very conscious effort to put as much space between me and the space suit as possible," he said of his wide variety of roles. But don't think he doesn't love "Star Trek." He even watched a bit of an old episode while getting dressed for the Whale Conservation Institute dinner. "`Star Trek' has brought more benefits than I ever could have imagined," he said, adding that he worried "that what could have been a wonderful gift would turn into an albatross." To avoid that Stewart will go back and forth, playing Picard as well as a wide variety of characters nothing like the venerable captain. And, if Dr. Payne will invite him, he's ready to go out on the Odyssey again and do a little diving. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ F A N R U N T R E K C O N V E N T I O N S ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Convention Announcement: Fan Run Star Trek Convention (update 04/03) Shore Leave 17 July 7 - 9, 1995 Hunt Valley Mariott Inn Shawan Rd.,Hunt Valley, MD Tel.
